Cashman On Trade Market

Talking to Newsday's Arthur Staple, Yankees GM Brian Cashman discussed the team's approach toward the trade market. Cashman said that if the team fixes itself by getting Brian Bruney healthy and Chien-Ming Wang right, there may not be a need to make a deal. Bruney returns from the DL Tuesday, while Wang's last-chance start comes Wednesday against John Lannan and the Nationals. Seems odd to me to place so much emphasis on a single start.

Staple also learned that Cashman intends to talk to Hal Steinbrenner if he seeks approval to add to the payroll. I'd be surprised to see money become an impediment for a deadline acquisition.

What are the team's needs? The Yankees' rotation currently ranks 12th in the AL with a 4.98 ERA. The question is whether Cashman could come up with a starter who'd be definitively better than Phil Hughes. As for the pen, Ken Rosenthal wrote Friday that the Yanks have already expressed interest in Colorado closer Huston Street and "eventually will target the best available late-inning relievers." The Angels are also known to be eyeing Street, having lost Scot Shields for the season.

Yankees In On Sano?

You've heard the name plenty around these parts over the past few weeks. Miguel Angel Sano, a 16-year-old infield prospect from the Dominican Republic, has been linked to the Pirates, Indians, Orioles and Twins.

Now it appears the Yankees have jumped into the bidding. As ESPN The Magazine's Jorge Arangure reported through his Twitter account this afternoon, Brian Cashman and Co. believe they have a "50/50" chance of landing the phenom.

It all comes down to dollars and cents, however, and the Yanks are actually practicing fiscal responsibility. That may come as a surprise, but keep in mind that throwing millions of dollars at a kid who just hit the legal driving age is a monstrous gamble. The Pirates are reportedly preparing an offer around $4MM, and it doesn't sound like the Yankees are willing to go that high. As Arangure continued in his "tweet," if the price was $3MM, "then yes."

Whoa. Just read this on Yahoo. Yanks are among 4 teams looking at Pedro strut his stuff in the Dominican Republic. Pedro in a Yankee's uniform????

I don't necessarily disagree but once again, Joba starts off by giving up 3 hits and 1 run in the first inning against Nationals for cryin' out loud. These youngsters have got to start producing--Joba, Wang, Hughes, etc. How is it that Marlins, etc. can get youngsters who pitch lights out and the mighty and wealthy Yankees can't? At least that is the way it seems over the last 8+ years. I understand Wang of old did a great job but all of a sudden he seems to be lost.

Appears for the moment Joba has settled in. 3 innings and 30 pitches--that's good! 6 innings, 4 walks, 3 earned runs and 100 pitches. Not particularly impressive. Ho hum Joba.

This whole team is either hot or cold. No in between. Where's the freaking vaunted offense we saw before the Boston series? It seems after the Yankees were swept in Beantown they've been going through the motions. It's pathetic to watch. I turned it off after the 5th inning. It was BORRRRRRRRRRRRING!

We've got 67 games under our belt. Joba has made 13 starts, pitching only 69 innings (5.4 innings/start average) Our bullpen can't stand 5-6 inning pitchers. The Yankee brass has all along stated that they will have Joba on an inning limit this year. Sooner or later he WILL have to go to the pen this year. Let's do it now and save the pen. Certainly Joba has been less than impressive as a starter.

It used to be the Yankees got the right players in trades having to do with the Red Sox. No longer. We took Nady and the Red Sox got Jason Bay. Nady's elbow is still barking and all the major papers are saying he probably won't be back this year, and will likely be playing ball next year in another uniform. Too bad, because I liked X. Looks like Swisher has found a home, as it's unlikely Matsui and Damon will return next year either.

Well I just read that Halladay would consider a trade and Toronto mgmt is willing to listen to offers. Guess what team rose to the top as a possible contender--Yankees. Less rumor than speculation really. But, Toronto would want youth and that means Joba or Hughes. Haladay is 32 and I think has 1 year on his contract left and a no trade clause (which would likely mean give me a new contract to waive the no trade clause). So, thoughts? He's great. But, should we trade youth?

I don't think Halliday is coming here, unless Boston shows a real interest in him. I've heard the Phillies. The rule of thumb is you don't trade players within your division. If that holds true the Yankees, Boston and Tampa Bay would be out of it automatically.

I doubt Halladay would be traded here. He is great and he's also 32 years old. He could have several good years ahead of him, but I am not a fan of trading away our young talent. If George were still pulling the strings, I would see this as more of a possibility.

Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman is reporting that the New York Yankees have inquired about Cleveland Indians' ace, Cliff Lee.

While the Yankees already have an impressive 1-2 punch with CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett, the addition of Lee would immediately vault them into being the favorites for the Word Series title. And, as every baseball fan knows, the Yankees can never have too much talent.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the New York Yankees remain in the mix for Roy Halladay.

It appears, that after reports surfaced yesterday that the Red Sox may have heightened their interest in Roy Halladay, Yankees GM Brian Cashman made the proverbial "just checking in" phone call to Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi. As Rosenthal puts it "where the Red Sox go, the Yankees follow, and vice versa."

However, as of now the Yankees are looking more like interested spectators than actual players, but as we all know that could change in a hurry.

Up to this point it's believed that in order for the Yankees to obtain Halladay they would have to part with both Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes, as a condition of Ricciardi's AL East "premium" package. But the Yankees have balked at the idea of including both young pitchers, however, Rosenthal does note that it's not out of the realm of possibility for the Yankees to be willing to part with one.

Furthermore, Rosenthal adds that Halladay isn't the only Blue Jay that the Yankees have their sights set on. It looks as though the Yankees have also inquired about Jays' reliever Jason Frasor.

The Yankee bullpen has certainly become much deeper with the recent success of Hughes, but with the Yankees one serious injury away from a "rotation crisis," the idea of adding another reliever seems smart. It would provide the team additional security should they need to move Hughes back to the bullpen.

I don't think this is going to happen, because the Yankees obviously don't want to part with both Hughes and Chamberlain. I could see Hughes going, along with some highly touted prospects. What could happen, and follow me on this, is if the Yankees trade Hughes in a deal to Toronto for Halladay, and with Wang being out for the remainder of the year, Chamberlain could go back to the bullpen and Halladay would take Wang's rotation spot. This is just pure speculation, but it could happen. Would I trade Halladay for Hughes. How badly do we want a 27th World Series? In a short series we'd be lights out against any team including the Angels. We could put in Sabathia, Burnett and Halladay to face any combinations of starters any other team could name and we'd be lights out. Thoughts.?

Very few teams if any can afford the Halladay deal. I frankly wouldn't trade Joba or Hughes for him. Let someone else take him. He's only one pitcher and the way both Hughes and Joba have been pitching (and Hughes still could be a starter) I say keep both of them. I know I may be foolish but I'm not sure Hallladay is going anywhere if not to the Yanks. So, let him sit in Toronto. Hell, even if he goes to the Angels or the Red Sox I still think we are no worse off (we can't beat either team so far.
