Clemens Makes First Public Denial! |
Lead | |
|
The Rocket has released a video on YouTube.com denying ever using steroids or HGH. Well, everybody wanted to hear from the man himself and now they have it. He's going to do a 60 minute segment interview with Mike Wallace on Jan. 8th. Hopefully, it will be an honest interview and not a cream puff version, so that the Rocket comes off credible.

I only hope that he is being honest with all of us or these denials will have a much bigger impact on his legacy than those who admitted their guilt. Yes, I know, innocent until proven guilty.

Clemens is a great pitcher. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, Steroids or not. He has had a problem with honesty in the past.
All I see in front of my face is the 2000 WS when Piazza hit a grounder and broke his bat with part of the bat going to the pitchers mounf and Clemens throwing the bat at Piazza. This was after all the trouble from Clemens hitting Piazza in the head earlier in the year. That act was one of a steroid user. Andy |

I think we all have our suspicions, but his camp seems bound and determined to clear his name. I for one will be glued to my TV to watch that 60 minutes piece.

One question I have, is if Clemens is innocent why hasn't Pettitte come out and say that in all the times he's been with Rocket he's never seen Clemens use???

The one thing that baffles me is (well not really baffles) why, when George Mitchell gave these guys a chance to respond to these allegations, very few if any of these players talked. If you were totally innocent why would you have a problem speaking with Mitchell? If it were me I'd have been screaming my head off, then getting an attorney. Not the other way around.

This whole thing stinks like 10 day old fish. You are right Russ, I would be declaring my innocence to anyone who would listen the minute they asked to speak to me...unless of course I had something to hide.

All of Roger's denial talk is either a really GOOD move (if he's actually innocent), or a really BAD move (if he actually is not).
Mark McGwire took the other path of NO COMMENT and not wanting to talk about the past. Maybe Roger saw Big Mac's silence as a sign of admitting guilt without actually saying it, and didn't want that perception hanging over his head. The problem now is proving it....either way. Ken |

Re: Clemens Makes First Public Denial!

The real problem, if Roger is innocent, is how does one go about proving a negative. In my line of work that crops up all the time on both the defense and prosecution side. How do you prove something that isn't there? Difficult job. I'll wait to see what Roger has to say but the job ahead of him ain't easy, that's for sure.

Re: Clemens Makes First Public Denial!

The problem is Roger (if innocent) shouldn't have to prove he didn't do it. As the person(s) who made the accusation (i.e. McNamee & Mitchell) they should have to produce proof that Clemens did do it. If they can't do that, then Mitchell should redact his report.
If this was a trial setting it would be up to Mitchell's side of the ledger to prove guilt. I don't think they can do that. I don't care if a hundred people said Clemens stuck a needle in his butt, unless he (a) admits it or (b) they have tangible evidence to prove it, then as far as I'm concerned he's innocent. |

Re: Clemens Makes First Public Denial!

They have evidence. You may not like it but they have evidence. And, to the extent that the witness has been corroborated by those who have fessed up, he is made more credible. So, Roger is in the position of having to prove a negative as I see it. JMHO

Re: Clemens Makes First Public Denial!

But, not one of these people who have "fessed up" said Roger Clemens took P.E.D.s. You know as well as I do that if you have two people and even if one says, "I did it, and so did Joe Blow," without corroborating evidence (checks, shipping labels, etc.) that admission is worthless.
It doesn't matter, because Roger Clemens is already guilty in the court of public opinion, and his admittance into the HOF is seriously in doubt. I don't think he will get the requisite 75% to get in. He's going to be on the sidelines with Bonds, McGwire and others. So tell me again why Roger Maris is still waiting for induction? BTW, I guess my not saving that game ticket from his 300th win game isn't such a bad thing huh? |

NYYlifetimefan |
Re: Clemens Makes First Public Denial!

You're right about the ticket.
BTW, none of the people who have fessed up said the "rat" was correct about me but incorrect about Roger--including his good buddy Andy who might be in the best position to know. Also, the others who have fessed up might not be in a position to know what Roger was doing. Oh, and you are so right about the "other" Roger--Mr. Maris. He should be in the HOF, plain and simple. |

Russ,
If you feel that way about Clemens (that until proven guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt), then why are you so adamant about Bonds? He hasn't been proven guilty of anything. I will be the first to condemn steroid users, BUT, I feel they and Rose belong in the Hall of fFame because of their accomplishments on the field. After all baseball let them play knowing of their frailities. Andy |

Re: Clemens Makes First Public Denial!

Because Andy, there are records and entries, etc. connecting Bonds to P.E.D.s. And Bonds isn't being tried for taking steroids, he's being tried for lying under oath and obstruction of justice. Bonds is in the same boat as Clemens.

Russ,
records are really not important to me anymore. I guess age has mellowed me. We haven't proved Bonds lied to the Grand Jury. My feeling with Bonds is that we hate him because of his arrogant personality and his connection to our beloved Ruths records (as I said they have less significence to me than they did when I was younger). Andy |

Re: Clemens Makes First Public Denial!

Well, he is arrogant for sure, but I wasn't upset when Maris broke the single season record (maybe because he was a Yankee I'll grant you), and I certainly wasn't mad when Henry Aaron passed the Bambino for the all time home run total (being a person of minority doesn't faze me at all). I guess the whole thing about Bonds is what turns people off.
First, he's a first class phony. He doesn't care about anybody but the guy he looks in the mirror. His personal life is a testimony to that. Second, his sudden and dramatic physical change in one off-season between 1998 and 1999. Third, nobody has gone to jail to avoid testifying for Clemens as they have Bonds (i.e. Greg Anderson). Fourth, they have records seized in search warrants linking Bonds to Balco, and Anderson, thus the lying under oath. Still, he looks the camera in the eye and lies. Now look at Clemens. So far they have one guy's word. Yes, he's been corroborated by other athletes copping out they took something here or something there. Fine. Not one of them has put Clemens feet to the fire. Plus, there's no physical evidence. We have one guy's word. I could say, "I injected Andy twice with P.E.D.s when he was in California. He supplied the stuff, but was too afraid to inject himself." So now your name is out there and how do you defend that? Not all these guys named in the Mitchell report were star athletes. In fact, their careers changed little if any after using. Now, do I think Roger Clemens took P.E.D.s? Yes, but that's my opinion. Is what's been presented so far enough to keep him from the HOF? No. Unless, somebody's got something more that saying he did it, then you have to look at the name on the ballot and say was it ever proven he did that? If the answer is no, then mark the ballot for induction. Same with Bonds, if he walks out of court with a not guilty, vote him in. Mark McGwire? His "I'm not here to talk about the past" is enough for me to keep him out. It was a tacit omission/confession. Just as a side note, I've said this before, what about Nolan Ryan? He continued at a high level well into his 40's. And he was around (1966-1993) when steroids hit the majors. He was 45 in 1992 when he threw 157.3 innings, struck out 157 (one per inning), and went 5-9 with an ERA of 3.72. Pretty good stats for a guy that age wouldn't you say? The next year he blew his elbow out (a common symptom of pitchers using juice), and his career ended. Check out his stats, especially after the age of 35, Nolan Ryan's Stats. The point is you can speculate, say anything and cast suspicion on anyone. It doesn't prove anything. |

On Baseball
Lawyer for Clemens Explains Strategy By MURRAY CHASS Published: January 1, 2008 In a lengthy conversation Friday with Rusty Hardin, Roger Clemenss lawyer, I was particularly interested in his answers to two questions. To Hardins credit, he answered both candidly with no attempt to obfuscate the answers with typical lawyerly prattle. Question No. 1: How do you prove a negative? Thats the problem; you dont, Hardin said. It all comes down to the credibility of the people involved. The only thing you can do, I guess, is give people reasons to believe or disbelieve one of the two parties. Question No. 2: Considering that you are trying to undermine Brian McNamees credibility, hasnt Andy Pettitte established the trainers credibility? Great question, Hardin said. I dont have an answer for it. Pettitte, Clemenss teammate and workout partner, has acknowledged that what McNamee told George J. Mitchells investigators was correct: He used human growth hormone. Andy said from the first moment McNamee was telling the truth, Hardin said, adding, But just because someone is telling the truth about one thing doesnt mean hes telling the truth about another thing. Hardins goal in representing Clemens and conducting his own investigation is to prove that the allegation that Clemens used steroids and H.G.H. is false. Source: NY Daily News |

Russ,
you made a heck of a lot of good points and they are all valid. I guess my issues are mainly 1. That baseball fans appear to be making Bonds the scapegoat or at least the poster boy for steroid useage when I TRULY believe that more than half of all ML'ers in the past 10 years (at least) have been users. 2. That since Baseball ACTIVELY (my firm belief) promoted and encouraged steroid use, the players should not be penalized for using by being kept out of the Hall of Fame. The HOF is about performance not ethics or morals or the like or else it would be diminished by 75% or so. With that statement I have to again support Rose for inclusion. I love the game, the in between the lines game, and am not an autograph seeker, do not look up to the players as role models, do not make an effort to meet them at their hotels, stc. I just enjoy the pure beauty of the play. Bonds, Clemens, Ryan, Ruth, Cobb, and Rose, et al all gave me that enjoyment. That said I am in favor of draconian measures to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from sports, but until the powers to be take that step I will still support the players. I know I am in the minority Andy |

Re: Clemens Makes First Public Denial!

Andy, as I said before, most players really didn't enhance their abilities to a degree where they made a difference. Barry Bonds did. He was a HOF player before he started allegedly using P.E.D.s in the off-season between 1998 & 1999. Barry Bonds made himself the poster boy for the steroid scandal.
Bonds thumbed his nose at everyone, and dared them to take him on, and now the federal government has. Now we'll await to see how good their case is. I put a lot of blame around: 1. The MLBPA for protecting these dopes. Protect the player at all costs has ruined the record books and really put a black eye on the sport. 2. The owners for thinking more about putting butts in the seats rather than keeping the game clean. 3. The Commissioner's Office for not nipping the problem in the bud. And this goes all the way back to Peter Ueberroth, and in between to Bud Selig. They all closed their eyes to the problem. 4. The fans for supporting all the above with their hard earned cash, because we were just as enthralled with watching balls leave the park as was everyone else. Who didn't stay glued to the TV watching McGwire and Sosa going hammer and tong at each other? So to a degree we're all to blame for the epidemic. I put most of the blame on Donald Fehr and the MLBPA for stonewalling this problem. It wasn't until the Feds threatened to climb up Baseball's ass with a microscope that both the Commissioner's Office and the MLBPA decided to sit down and hammer out some testing guidelines, and even then it took a couple of tries to get where we are now. I want to see both sides agree to a testing procedure that will detect any and all P.E.D.s and HGH. That would necessitate a blood test. So be it. Until all drugs are detectable, any testing is a joke. I agree with you, that Pete Rose deserves a nod for the HOF. He had/has a bona fide medically recognized disease just the same as alcoholism and drugs. Gambling is an addiction and should have been viewed as such. My God, Steve Howe was suspended and brought back no fewer than 8 times for drug addiction. Pete Rose can't even enter a ballpark unless he buys the ticket. The minute MLB brought him back for that 100 Greatest Players ceremony that should have ended his lifetime ban forever. He was there when MLB needed him to be, and they need to return the favor. Sorry to have written a novella here.

Russ, I agree with you about the differences between Bonds and Clemens. It would have been better for Roger to come out immediately after that report was issued to state his case, or even better, before the report was made public since he knew he was being named before it was released.
